Learn how to deliver new services
My journey with BTY began in the Independent Certifier department, working on numerous large-scale P3 projects across Western Canada.
As the Project Delivery service stream was re-launched at BTY, I moved across to the Project Delivery team and stepped back into serving clients as a Project Manager, a role that I had fulfilled for the first four years of my career back in the UK. I am currently responsible for several projects across BC, with a combined project value of about $30 million.
Although similar in many ways, there are a number of significant differences between Project Management in Canada and in the UK. They include the suite of Construction Contracts and the preferred procurement methods, as well as variations in the technical terminology used. Mastering the new contracts, methods and terminology proved to be a steep learning curve. The help and support provided by my peers and colleagues helped me overcome the challenge fairly quickly.
Working with the Independent Certifier team provided many opportunities to broaden my knowledge and understanding of large complex construction projects, in a variety of sectors, across a number of provinces. It also have me insight into various P3 contracts, as well as contractual relationships among the parties involved in the project.
BTY is right to pride itself on its company culture. It is a welcoming and supportive environment that many find easy to fit into. A strong work ethic and a willingness to learn are key to success. Both my team and manager provide help and support for me to further develop within my role. Access to senior management is also readily available. This support and access not only create a sense of community, but also provides additional project and networking opportunities to advance within the industry.
